what covid taught me

  1. i have experienced a pride deep in my soul to be a nurse. although i am not on the front lines in the hot zones, i have had just a glimpse of the impact of this disease in my own workplace and i am HONORED to be part of this profession. when i see the footage or photos of the healthcare teams on the front lines, their grief, fear and unwavering dedication are palpable. they are heroes because they risk themselves to save others.
  2. we were designed to live in community. isolation has been painful, depressing and lonely. it has highlighted the family unit and for me as a single mom, has reminded me that my family unit is incomplete and at times exaggerated the strain i feel to fill multiple roles on my own.
  3. kids are intuitive. though i have tried to protect them from the reality of the horror our nation is facing and only provide facts that they need to understand, they have connected some dots and seem to feel the gravity of what is going on. we do not watch the news but they often overhear adult conversations. when my daughter had to be tested for covid, she feared that she was going to die. she was correct to make this assumption based on what she had heard but it just highlighted to me how fragile our children can be. i have learned through this to answer their questions honestly, squash misunderstood information as soon as possible and give them space to express their feelings/fears/emotions.
  4. teachers are saints.
  5. fear creates division.
  6. faith in God is my only true peace in this storm.
